What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites store on your computer to help distinguish you from other users. We use cookies to help us provide you with a better experience when you browse our website and help us to improve our site through monitoring visitor interest and behaviour anonymously.

Cookies come in a few different flavours;

  • Persistent cookies are used to retain user preferences, relating to a particular website you visit. This can be things like whether you want to be logged in automatically when you visit the website, or whether you have already been asked to take part in a survey for example. Persistent cookies exist on your machine for a pre-set length of time.
  • Session cookies are used to retain information during a particular time you have used a website; this can be things like storing the contents of your shopping basket on an e-commerce site. They are deleted as soon as you close your browser
  • Third-party cookies are used by advertisers and social networks to learn about your browsing habits to help deliver relevant advertising and content to you. This, for example means you could be more likely to see adverts for shops you already shop at.

What cookies do we use in our applications?

In our applications we use Persistent and Session cookies, and a small number of third-party cookies are also used from trusted service providers to improve the quality of the service we deliver to you.

Persistent cookies

A small number of persistent cookies may be used by sites with a short lifetime, typically 1 day, to remember details for frequently used applications and reduce the need to re-enter data or configure preferences. If you wish to opt out of these, please see the below instructions for managing cookie preferences for popular browsers, where you will be able to change settings for persistent cookies.

Sessions cookies

Most of the cookies used in our applications are session cookies, which mean they are deleted by your web browser when you stop viewing content from the application. These cookies are required for the system to know who you are and to remember your interactions with the application or any temporary preferences you have set. We do not recommend disabling these at this would adversely impact your experience of the application.

Third party cookies

Some third-party cookies may be set on your computer by service providers we use to deliver our services to you, including those managing traffic routing and application performance monitoring. If you wish to opt out of these, please see the below instructions for managing cookie preferences for popular browsers, where you will be able to change settings for third party cookies.

Please note: We do not recommend disabling cookies entirely as this will prevent most websites and services (such as webmail and social media sites) from working.
